  • This paper was commissioned by The King's Fund to inform the GP Inquiry panel. The views expressed are those of the authors and not of the panel.
  • This paper is one of a series prepared for the inquiry into the quality of general practice in England commissioned by The King’s Fund. The specific focus of the inquiry is to examine the role of general practice and the quality of the services it provides. The focus of this paper is on health promotion and ill-health prevention. It is not intended to be an exhaustive review but rather to give an overview of the range of activities undertaken by general practitioners (GPs) and general practice. The paper draws on a brief review of the literature in areas of primary and secondary prevention in general practice. The review focuses on four specific areas of activity: childhood immunisation, smoking cessation, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
