  • Recent government guidance, "End of Life Care Strategy: Promoting High Quality Care for All Adults at the End of Life" and "Guidance on Cancer Services: Improving Supportive and Palliative Care for Adults with Cancer", has raised the profile of end-of-life-care (EOLC). However, historically care has been poorly organised, with large gaps in provision depending on geography and diagnosis. Some of these gaps are a result of confusion over roles and responsibilities, and a reluctance or lack of confidence among health and social care professionals in providing this care and engaging with patients and carers in a meaningful way at the end of life. This report forms part of the wider inquiry into the quality of general practice in England commissioned by The King’s Fund, focusing specifically on the quality of end-of-life care (EOLC). This report discusses: the role of general practice in EOLC, what high-quality EOLC in general practice might look like and how this might be measured.
  • This research paper was commissioned by The King's Fund to inform the panel of the Inquiry into the Quality of General Practice in England. The views expressed are those of the authors and not of the panel.
