  • The first wave of personal medical services (PMS) pilots have now been 'live' for more than three years. Having started life in the shadow of better publicised reforms, they are now at the centre of government strategy for primary care. This publication aims to share the lessons emerging from this initiative. It reports on the findings of an evaluation of selected first wave pilots carried out by the King's Fund and contains a number of first-hand accounts from innovative pilot sites. The book explores new models of primary care including the salaried employment of GPS, new roles for nurses and the role of primary care trusts in commissioning primary care. It concludes with an analysis of the evolution of PMS and its impact on the modernisation of the NHS. [SMD}
