  • This report provides a snapshot of user and public involvement within primary care groups (PCGs) in London, based on the views of their chief executives and lay members. It is the first output of a two year study conducted by the King's Fund Primary Care Programme which will describe and evaluate the approaches to public involvement adopted by PCGs in the capital. The creation of PCGs included two formal mechanisms for public involvement: the appointment of a lay member to every PCG board and the requirement for open board meetings. However, the broader agenda requires that PCGs take account of local views, allow the public to participate in decision-making, communicate with stakeholders and foster opportunities for public involvement. Although this report is realistic about current constraints within PCGs, the authors hope the content will be useful to those who are pursuing meaningful involvement in primary care.
