  • This report is drawn from two seminars attended by frontline practitioners and others working in health, housing and social care held at the King's Fund in February and April 1999. Participants discussed their views of current treatment, care and support of older people, and what they would want for their old age should such assistance be needed. From these discussions, a number of key messages emerged: for older people now, and for their own old age, participants want: treatment and services that promote dignity, choice and autonomy, and enable older people to lead ordinary lives; systems which respond to older people's needs as defined by themselves; more adapted accommodation and increased rehabilitative services; one-stop information centres; community services better geared towards older people's needs; key workers, to coordinate treatment; staff who can work across organisational and professional boundaries; and more training in interpersonal skills, and more support for, staff. Key priorities for change include: a decent income for all in retirement; an equitable system of funding long-term care; and greater valuing by society of older people.
