Abstract
  • The King's Fund has come together in a consortium with the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health and the Department of Health to establish the 'Working Together in London initiative. This will commit £2 million in the years 1998-2000 to improve the integration of services for people with severe mental health problems in three areas of the capital. Aimed at encouraging the social inclusion of a highly vulnerable and marginalised group, Working Together in London will establish assertive outreach teams to work with severely mentally ill people. It will also seek to integrate the work of the teams with a range of local services - covering health care, social care, housing, training, employment and benefits. This research review was commissioned to help develop the thinking behind the initiative. The picture it paints of a lack of integration between the urban regeneration agenda and local mental health services is striking. It also points to the considerable potential to bring the two issues together and tackle the social exclusion of severely mentally ill people in our inner cities.
