Abstract
  • This is the fifth in a series of publications based on the work of the King's Fund Nursing Development Units (NDUs). In it, nurses, midwives and health visitors relate their experiences of ethical difficulty in their everyday practice. These stories, recounted in their own words, are offered as material for reflection, with suggested discussion points and commentary focussing on four themes: accepting and respecting the individuality and autonomy of the patient or client; the nurse-patient/client relationship; the nurse-family relationship; and the role and responsibilities of the nurse. The book identifies key factors in the developmental of ethical practice and emphasises the importance of opportunities to reflect on and discuss ethical issues in day-to-day practice. Practical ideas for facilitating discussion and a reading list are included.
