  • The author summarises her work in undergraduate medical education at the King's Fund Centre from January 1990 to August 1995. Phase One centred on a national enquiry into the future of clinical teaching designed to raise awareness of the need for change and to build a consensus on the changes required; Phase Two centred on measures to facilitate the implementation of the changes identified during Phase One. Four main issues were addressed: the sharing of ideas and good practice; improving the quality of medical education; new methods of clinical teaching, and the future of health care and implications for medical education. The author's observations and two studies carried out in 1995 show that the momentum for change is firmly established. However, the changes are mostly being directed towards curriculum development and very little towards staff development or organisational change.
