This report provides a companion to the publication published in 1994 entitled `The development of a nursing-led in-patient service' by the same authors. The introduction of nurse led beds on Byron Ward Nursing Development Unit, King's Healthcare is described. The earlier volume provides an overview of the work undertaken in developing the service and the rationale for it. The focus of this volume is on giving more concrete information on the operation of the service using data collected during the course of the first 18 months of the project. Pilot results suggest that nurse managed care may have a positive impact on a range of outcomes, including hospital stay and patient dependency. Detailed information is provided on research methods used, difficulties encountered and patient outcomes.
