  • East Birmingham Hospital's first user forum was organised as part of a project to develop a patient-centred approach in the outpatient department. The assistant unit general manager (patient services and planning) was also interested in piloting the method as a way of obtaining the views of service users, and so an independent evaluation was requested. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the value of the forum as a method for obtaining user views. The evaluator observed the forum as it took place. Then, when the forum finished, users were asked to complete a short questionnaire about the forum. The evaluator stayed for the de-briefing session with the facilitators and asked them their views on the forum. The outpatient department manager and other health service staff involved were asked about the usefulness of the subsequent report produced by the CHC members who acted as facilitators. Finally the hospital management were asked to provide an action plan of what they intended to do as a result of the information collected during the user forum. Although there were difficulties in running the forum, it was felt that it was a success. This brief report summarises the project and aims to help others learn from the experience.
