  • Community-based teaching is of central importance in current debates on the future of undergraduate medical education as changes in health care and service delivery are forcing medical schools to adopt new ways of clinical teaching. This report arises out of a conference held at the King's Fund Centre in July 1992 to highlight key issues in community-based teaching through the presentation and discussion of case studies and the sharing of ideas and experiences. The report outlines the pragmatic and philosophical reasons for a community orientation in the undergraduate curriculum; presents examples of community-based initiatives form different UK medical schools (involving general practitioners, hospital specialists, and a range of groups and individuals in the community); and highlights problems, constraints and possible solutions in order to make a series of suggestions for future research, development and decision making.
