Abstract
  • Within the reformed NHS attention is rightly being given to developing the new role of DHAs and FHSAs. Improved health and health care will not be achieved without effective and influential purchasing authorities. This report focuses on the specific contribution that the Chief Executive makes to the achievement of this goal. Its purpose is to contribute to current thinking, to stimulate discussion and to identify what needs to be done corporately and individually to develop the role effectively. Seven assumptions about the context in which the Chief Executive will be operating are discussed, with particular reference to the demands they will make on the Chief Executive of an organisation whose task is to secure improvements in the health of the local population.
