Abstract
  • This paper surveys the existing scene for nurses working with people with learning difficulties, and in relation to that, sketches out the likely results of various courses of action following the Briggs report. Discussion covers nursing for people with learning difficulties in 1973; goals of services for people with learning difficulties; tasks which have to be undertaken to reach these goals; why services are not better than they are and what possible changes could take place. Six appendices cover: the GNC syllabus for training nurses to work with people with learning difficulties; the CCETSW pattern of training for the residential worker; the Briggs Committee proposals for staff working with people with learning difficulties; a suggested syllabus for training hospital and social service staff; a suggested method of developing syllabi in parallel; the Camphill Rudolph Steiner Schools syllabus.
