Despite government policy concentrating on the pursuit of greater efficiency in the NHS and the encouragement of private sector alternatives, effective public participation in health is essential. The editors argue that no combination of health services is going to be satisfactory which does not explicitly recognise and promote the importance of participation. This publication examines the importance of participation by the individual, the local community and national organisations in the matter of health.
