Abstract
  • The nine people about whom this book is written all have severe disabilities yet they have rejected the idea that the only possibility for them is a place in a residential institution and have established homes of their own. The book challenges policy makers, architects and people working in statutory and voluntary services to look again at their assumptions about what is possible for people with very severe disabilities. The greatest barriers to independent living may not be physical disabilities, but barriers created by laws, regulations and services.
