  • This document considers that the role of volunteers working in psychiatric hospitals is essentially to add a dimension of reality to the lives of the patients and, by so doing, to help them maintain, develop and strengthen their links with the community. A variety of voluntary services that are being given in psychiatric hospitals or departments is included under the headings: recreation and general; special skills; and help outside hospitals. An illustration of voluntary help in a psychiatric hospital is also included.
