Abstract
  • This memorandum has been written as a guide to all those interested in hospital administration who may be involved in deciding their own hospital's nursing establishment requirements. The document does not attempt to produce any quick and easy formula as an answer to the staffing problem of any one hospital. There is as yet no known answer to the often repeated question : `How many nursing staff do we require in this hospital group, hospital ward or department?'. Every hospital differs from every other one in the service it and the staff obtainable and acceptable in quality and quantity at one hospital is unlikely to satisfy the requirements of another. Each hospital must therefore decide its own nurse staffing levels in relation to other requirements.
