  • As highlighted by the report of the Royal Commission on the NHS, nurses are the largest staff group in the NHS and account for over one quarter of the total current expenditure in the NHS. Compared to doctors, their manpower and training needs have received relatively little attention until the recent past. This series of essays considers four vital areas of concern to the nursing profession: the role of the nurse; clinical career structures; nurse education and research; and the quality of nursing care.
