Abstract
  • The Single European Market has nearly arrived when people will experience freedom of movement of goods, services and people between the Member States of the European Community. For the health service, this has two main concerns. First, the possible increase in the migration of unskilled labour will effect the health of those migrants and migrant communities already in Britain, and second, the potential increase in the numbers of health workers seeking employment in the NHS would have serious implications for the current NHS workforce. This dimension of the changes after 1992 had not been sufficiently explored until this conference, when experts from Britain and from Europe gave their predictions and perspectives on this issue. The papers collected here represent an authoritative source of debate and information in a very poorly documented area.
