Abstract
  • Reorientating the NHS to be both needs led and responsive to users has to be a joint endeavour for both commissioners and providers. A new synthesis is required to combine the best of personal patient care with a focus on population health. The King's Fund has recognised community oriented primary care (COPC) as one such synthesis through which district health authorities, family health services authorities and primary health care teams can develop effective working relationships. COPC is a well established approach to health care which combines the principles and practice of public health and general practice. It offers participants an action orientated framework for working together on health needs at practice level. A three part programme has been launched by the King's Fund in partnership with the Department of Social Medicine, Hadassah Medical Organisation and Hebrew University with four pilot sites. The programme includes: a resource for developers for use in structured workshops; a course for developers to build local capacities to support COPC; and an organisational consultancy for commissioning organisations. This is a package which has been designed to support a four day workshop for primary health care teams with the emphasis on developing team rather than individual skills. Another ringbinder in the same box contains overhead projector slides to be used in conjunction with this ringbinder.
