This book has been produced to convey the idea that people with learning difficulties are entitled to dignified, homelike surroundings which will give them fuller enjoyment and will also help them to learn how to live. Most of the ideas are not original, but they stem from a general awakening of progressive opinion from the practical experience of many who care for people with learning difficulties, and from the study of researchers. Every proposal made in this book can be realised within the terms of the Government white paper `Better services for the mentally handicapped' Cmnd 4683.
